Drax

Drax Group’s purpose is to enable a zero carbon, lower cost energy future. Having converted Drax Power Station in the UK to use sustainable biomass instead of coal, we have become the UK’s biggest renewable power generator and the largest decarbonisation project in Europe. In 2019 Drax announced a world-leading ambition to be carbon negative by 2030, using Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) technology. The Group aims to capture 12Mt a year of carbon removals globally, by 2030. Drax has 17 operational pellet plants and developments and is targeting 8Mt of production capacity by 2030, which will require the development of over 3Mt of new biomass pellet production capacity. The pellets are produced using materials sourced from sustainably managed working forests.

Européenne de Biomasse has invented a purified biogenic carbon concentrate: HPCI®. HPCI® is manufactured from agricultural and forestry residues using Edb-HPCI® technology: a continuous, high-yield steam cracking of dry biomass. HPCI® comes in the form of a micronized, purified and aseptic powder or high-density, water-resistant pellets. HPCI® simplifies energy-intensive industries such as biorefineries and power plants. It is manufactured in the heart of biomass deposits and delivered with low carbon intensity. It is standard, no matter the season, biomass or plant. With its industrial quality, it requires no preparation and reduces the user's land footprint and investments. In addition to replacing coal, HPCI® is the main ingredient to produce ethanol, SAF, pyrolysis oil, syngas, etc. Edb-HPCI® is protected by 20 international patents.

Biomass Connect

Biomass Connect is a demonstration and knowledge-sharing initiative to showcase best practice and innovations in biomass feedstock production. Biomass Connect and the 11 BFI Innovation projects are part of the Biomass Feedstocks Innovation Programme (BFI), a £36m programme funded through the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero’s £1 billion Net Zero Innovation Portfolio, that aims to accelerate the commercialisation of innovative clean energy technologies and processes through the 2020s and 2030s. BFI aims to increase the production of sustainable UK biomass feedstocks.

Biomass Connect has 8 demonstration hubs located across the UK, in Ceredigion, South Ayrshire, Buckinghamshire, Devon, Edinburgh, County Down, Tyne & Wear and Yorkshire. Each site is growing up to 11 species of short-rotation trees and perennial grasses. These include Miscanthus and short-rotation coppice willow, which produce large amounts of biomass plant material that can be used to produce heat or electricity or used in a wide range of bio-based products. The project compares how well the same crops and varieties grow in different regions across the UK and demonstrates related innovations that have potential for economic and environmental benefits. An extensive website - www.biomassconnect.org - provides robust, independent information on biomass feedstock performance, agronomy, economics and environmental benefits to landowners and land managers.
